“A Heartfelt Rescue at 30,000 Feet: Pilot Adopts Kitten After Saving 145 Pets from Hurricane Devastation”

On October 12, Southwest Airlines pilot Matthew Prebish embarked on a life-changing mission, flying 145 animals to safety from the wreckage of Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene. In partnership with Greater Good Charities and Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, this flight aimed to relocate shelter pets from Southeast shelters to safe havens in the Midwest.

The animals, including both cats and dogs from Tennessee and Florida, were flown from the Greater Good Charities’ South Carolina Rescue Campus to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. From there, the animals were distributed to eight Midwest shelters, offering them a chance to start anew and find loving homes. Along with these furry passengers, the flight carried humanitarian aid to assist communities in North Carolina still recovering from Hurricane Helene.

The rescue mission wasn’t just about saving animals. It also had a surprising twist—Pilot Prebish developed a deep connection with one of the passengers, Avery, a kitten rescued from Tennessee. By the time the plane landed, Prebish had already decided to adopt Avery, and the kitten found a forever home in the cockpit.

“Sometimes, fate has its way, and that was certainly the case for Avery and me,” said Captain Prebish, reflecting on the unexpected bond. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue’s CEO, Mirah A. Horowitz, also shared her excitement, saying, “It was love at 30,000 feet. Sometimes, things are just meant to be.”

This rescue flight, in partnership with Southwest Airlines, played an important role in alleviating the pressures faced by shelters overwhelmed with animals after the storms. It provided the much-needed space for shelters to care for the increasing number of displaced animals.

Before the flight, veterinarians from Banfield Pet Hospital conducted health checks and ensured that each pet was fit for travel. The journey was also supported by a lead veterinarian who traveled with the animals to ensure their wellbeing.

Despite the ongoing tragedy in the wake of Hurricanes Milton and Helene, stories like Avery’s adoption shine as a symbol of hope amidst disaster. While many communities in the Southeast continue their recovery, efforts to rescue and relocate displaced animals are a crucial part of the ongoing mission to bring comfort to both pets and the people who love them.
