Kirk Herbstreit Honors His Golden Retriever Ben: ‘Forever in Our Hearts’

Kirk Herbstreit, the renowned ESPN college football analyst, has shared a heartbreaking update: his cherished golden retriever and emotional support dog, Ben, has passed away. Known for his gentle spirit and constant companionship, Ben was much more than a pet—he was a trusted friend and an adored member of the Herbstreit family.
Herbstreit, who also serves as a sportscaster for Amazon Prime, revealed that Ben had been battling cancer. Despite undergoing chemotherapy and holistic treatments, the disease had advanced aggressively, leaving the family with the difficult decision to euthanize him.
In a heartfelt social media post, Herbstreit expressed his grief while thanking fans for their support during Ben’s health struggles. “This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write,” he began. “We discovered today that Ben’s cancer had progressed beyond hope, and we had to say goodbye. It’s devastating, but it was the only option to end his suffering.”
Reflecting on their bond, Herbstreit shared, “I’ve loved many dogs, but Ben was truly special. He had a way of understanding me without words—a silent connection that was profound and comforting. Whether we were at home or traveling for work, Ben was always by my side. He welcomed everyone with a wagging tail and a warm presence that could brighten any room.”
The tribute also highlighted Ben’s impact on Herbstreit’s family. “Ben wasn’t just my companion; he was a source of love and strength for all of us,” he wrote. “He stood by us during tough times, including when my son Zak faced health challenges. Ben’s loyalty and warmth carried us through so much. I’ll be forever grateful for the ten years we had with him. God, please bless his majestic soul.”
Herbstreit had previously asked fans for prayers as Ben’s condition worsened. On November 4, just days before his passing, Herbstreit shared an emotional update, stating that Ben could no longer walk or eat. Despite their best efforts, it became clear that Ben’s time was coming to an end.
Fans across the nation, who had come to love Ben through Herbstreit’s social media posts and game-day appearances, joined in mourning the golden retriever’s loss. Ben’s easygoing demeanor and calming presence had made him a fan favorite, often stealing the spotlight at college football events.
Though heartbroken, Herbstreit expressed gratitude for the time he had with Ben. “He was truly a gift,” he wrote. “His memory will stay with us forever, and I know he’ll always be in my heart.”
