Hyundai Recalls Over 42,000 Vehicles Due to Wiring Defect Leading to Roll-Away Risk

Hyundai Motor North America has announced a recall of over 42,000 vehicles due to a critical wiring defect that increases the risk of roll-away incidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed on Wednesday that certain 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz and Hyundai Tucson models may shift out of “park” without requiring the brake pedal to be pressed.

This defect affects all 2025 Santa Cruz and Tucson models sold in the U.S., including approximately 35,500 Tucson SUVs and 6,900 Santa Cruz truck-SUV hybrids. According to NHTSA estimates, only about 1% of the vehicles are expected to have the defect. The Santa Cruz, a pickup-SUV hybrid, retails starting at $33,000, while the Tucson, an SUV, begins at over $28,000.

Although hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Tucson are set to launch later this fall, it remains unclear whether these models will be affected by the recall. The issue first came to light in late October when Hyundai’s North American Safety Office (NASO) investigated a report of a corporate fleet Tucson shifting gears independently. By early November, it was determined that the same wiring defect also impacted Santa Cruz models. On November 13, the North America Safety Decision Authority confirmed the problem, leading to the official recall announcement.

Hyundai has assured owners they can continue driving their vehicles but strongly advises using the parking brake whenever parking. To resolve the issue, Hyundai dealers will reroute the console extension wiring assembly at no cost to the owner.

Vehicle owners can expect to receive official recall notices in the mail starting January 19, 2025.

As of now, Hyundai has not received any reports of injuries, crashes, or fires linked to the defect in vehicles already sold.

This recall adds to Hyundai’s growing list of recent recalls. The automaker also issued a recall for over 145,000 electric Genesis and IONIQ models, including the IONIQ 6 (2023–2025) and the Genesis GV60 (2023–2025). These vehicles have a separate issue involving the integrated charging control units (ICCU), which could become damaged and fail to charge the batteries properly.

To address this, Hyundai dealers will inspect, replace, or update the ICCU and its fuse, free of charge.
