The Return of Ram's Midsize Truck: Big Plans in the Works

Ram’s CEO teases a surprising midsize truck arriving by 2026 while the 1500 REV and Ramcharger gear up for launch.

Ram Midsize Pickup Confirmed for 2026 Debut

Ram is officially re-entering the midsize truck market, with plans to launch a brand-new model by 2026, according to Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis. “I desperately need a midsize truck because everything is so expensive,” Kuniskis told MotorTrend. After discontinuing the legacy Ram 1500 “Classic,” the brand lacks an affordable entry-level option—a void the midsize truck is poised to fill.

Although the vehicle’s platform and powertrains are under wraps, Kuniskis hinted at a versatile approach. “Today’s sport versions of lifestyle trucks are doing everything traditional trucks used to,” he explained, suggesting the new midsize could appeal to a broader audience. Ram’s STLA Large platform is a strong contender, offering the flexibility to support internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric powertrains.

The name “Dakota,” long associated with Ram’s midsize lineup, is still owned by Stellantis and remains a potential choice for the new truck. However, production won’t start before 2027, as the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois undergoes retooling.

Big Plans for Ram’s Larger Models

While the midsize truck brews in the background, Ram is gathering momentum for its larger models.

  • Ram 1500 REV: The electric full-size pickup, set to launch in the first half of 2025, has garnered over 30,000 “hand-raisers.” Although delayed slightly to ensure top-notch quality, the REV rides on the STLA Frame platform, promising impressive performance for EV enthusiasts.
  • Ram 1500 Ramcharger: An extended-range plug-in hybrid is also due in mid-2025, blending traditional towing capabilities with electrification. Designed to ease traditional truck owners into EVs, the Ramcharger uses a gas engine to generate electricity, extending its range.

A Midsize Truck That Will “Surprise Us”

Ram CEO Chris Feuell offered a few more insights into the forthcoming midsize truck, confirming the company has finalized the platform and design approach. While tight-lipped about specifics, Feuell promised the platform choice would surprise enthusiasts, possibly hinting at a unibody design on the STLA Large platform instead of a conventional body-on-frame build.

The truck will feature multiple powertrain options to cater to diverse markets, including North America and global buyers. “We’re not in this to build a niche vehicle,” Feuell emphasized. This aligns with the midsize truck’s mission to compete with market leaders like the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger.

Though concept reveals are unlikely until 2025, the new midsize pickup is expected to deliver a balance of affordability and performance. Whether it revives the Dakota name or introduces a fresh moniker, Ram is fully committed to making its mark in the midsize segment.
