Wildlife Photographer Builds Bond With Rare Orange-and-Black Cross Fox in Newfoundland

A patient wildlife photographer spent months gaining the trust of a striking cross fox in Newfoundland, capturing rare and intimate photos of this melanistic marvel in its natural environment.
Nature continues to amaze us with its endless diversity, and one wildlife photographer had the rare opportunity to witness it firsthand. In the rugged terrain of Newfoundland, Canada, photographer Sam Gaby encountered a striking fox whose fur set it apart from the rest. With a brilliant mix of orange and black and a dark stripe running down its back, this fox displayed a rare genetic trait known as melanism. Unlike the typical red fox, this animal is classified as a cross fox, a variation seen in approximately 30% of Canada’s red fox population.

Sam didn’t simply snap a photo and walk away. Over the course of several months, he worked patiently to earn the fox’s trust. “I wanted to show him I wasn’t a threat,” Sam explained. His consistent presence, especially around sunset, eventually helped the fox grow comfortable with both Sam and his camera. The trust they developed allowed Sam to capture the fox in candid moments, showcasing its natural behaviors and personality.

Cross foxes are known for their unique appearance—darker fur due to melanism, larger tails, and more striking contrasts than their red fox relatives. While melanism often results in completely black animals, this fox displayed an extraordinary pattern of rich orange fur marked by inky black streaks. These distinct markings give the cross fox its name, as the dark stripe across the shoulders and down the back resembles a cross.

Sam’s dedication didn’t go unrewarded. Over time, he observed the fox hunting, caching food, playing, and interacting with its sibling, who also appears in some of the images. These encounters offered valuable insights into the daily life and social habits of this rare animal. Sam described the fox as “intelligent, playful, and beautiful”—qualities that shine through in his photography.

The resulting images are more than just stunning wildlife shots—they’re the product of patience, respect, and a deep connection between human and animal. Through his lens, Sam Gaby invites us to appreciate the beauty and complexity of Newfoundland’s wildlife and the incredible cross fox that stands as a testament to nature’s endless creativity.
