Miraculous Recovery: Abandoned Puppy Overcomes Devastating Condition to Find a Forever Home

Miracle for Abandoned Puppy with Rare Condition

When Starfish, a 10-week-old German Shepherd, was left abandoned in a beer box on a beach in California, her future seemed bleak. The tiny puppy was unable to stand, lying completely flat like a pancake, but her tail wagged eagerly as a human approached her. Despite her adorable nature, Starfish was in desperate need of help.

Rushed to a shelter, the technicians believed her organs were malformed and there was little hope for her survival. They decided euthanasia was the only option for the struggling pup. At that moment, with the needle in hand, a glimmer of hope appeared.

Alaina Onesko, an Animal Control Officer, was on a walk at Crown Beach in the San Francisco Bay area when she stumbled upon the abandoned beer box. “I saw a beer box with two little ears sticking out of it,” Onesko recalls. Upon opening the box, she saw the sweet, bright-eyed German Shepherd puppy lying flat. When she picked her up, she could immediately sense something different about the pup.

The little dog was struggling to move, unable to stand, yet still full of life. Onesko rushed her to the nearby shelter, where the technicians made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize her. However, just as they were preparing to do so, John Lipp, CEO of the Friends of Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS), walked in and recognized that Starfish had something special about her. He suggested a second opinion, and that decision turned out to be life-changing for the pup.

The veterinary team soon discovered that Starfish was suffering from Swimmer’s Syndrome, a developmental condition where the puppy’s tendons and muscles don’t develop properly, leaving the legs unable to support the body for standing or walking. The condition, though serious, was treatable with physical therapy and surgery, and Starfish’s prognosis improved dramatically. She was named Starfish because of her “splayed out” appearance, much like a starfish.

With the support of FAAS, Starfish began her recovery journey, which involved surgeries and intensive physical therapy. It was during her foster care that Maggie, a young volunteer, fell deeply in love with Starfish. “She was the most precious thing in the entire world,” Maggie recalls. Despite her inability to walk, Starfish was the sweetest puppy, and the bond between the two grew stronger every day.

After initially planning to foster Starfish for just a couple of days, Maggie and her family found themselves unable to part with the little dog. Maggie even ran away briefly to prevent Starfish from being taken to another home. It wasn’t long before her family realized Starfish, now named Rose, was meant to stay with them forever.

Under their care, Rose’s health improved. Through patience and dedication, she learned to lift herself and walk again. Though she enjoys visits to the dog park, Rose’s true passion is swimming, which helps strengthen her back legs. Over time, she stopped twisting her legs as she walked, a significant milestone in her recovery. Rose’s story of perseverance and love captured the hearts of everyone around her, and she became an inspiration to others.

The family set up a GoFundMe campaign to help raise funds for Rose’s surgeries and to support other animals in need at FAAS. Rose, who now lives happily with a four-legged sibling named Pearl the cat, is thriving. FAAS reports that Rose is now an active, healthy dog who loves to run, jump, and chase squirrels.

Her family believes she was meant to be with them, fulfilling a promise that even those who face challenges deserve a second chance at life and a home filled with love. Rose continues to inspire everyone she meets with her resilience and joyful spirit, proving that no matter how tough life gets, there is always hope.
