Lake Effect Snow Warning Issued for Parts of New York
The National Weather Service (NWS) is urging New Yorkers in certain regions to reconsider travel plans this weekend as a strong lake effect snowstorm threatens to blanket areas with several feet of snow. The warning, issued for Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, southern Erie counties, and the Tug Hill Plateau, begins at 7 a.m. Friday and lasts through 7 a.m. Monday.
“Heavy lake effect snow expected. Multiple feet of snow will be likely through the weekend in the most persistent lake snows,” the warning states. Snowfall rates could surpass 2 inches per hour, making it nearly impossible for snowplows to maintain clear roads, according to meteorologist David Thomas.
Dangerous Travel Conditions Expected
Road conditions are expected to become treacherous, with poor visibility and rapidly accumulating snow creating a significant risk for travelers. The NWS warns of potential road closures and emphasizes that weather can change dramatically within short distances.
“Travel will be very difficult and at times nearly impossible,” the NWS advises. Motorists who cannot avoid travel should drive with extreme caution, allowing extra time to reach destinations and maintaining ample distance from other vehicles.
Thanksgiving Travelers Advised to Adjust Plans
With nearly 80 million Americans traveling for Thanksgiving, the storm could have widespread impacts on weekend plans. Black Friday shoppers and those returning home after the holiday may face delays or disruptions due to hazardous conditions.
In Albany, a separate winter storm watch predicts snowfall of 7 inches or more, which could further complicate travel for last-minute Thanksgiving preparations or returns.
For the safest course of action, the NWS recommends postponing travel until after the storm or leaving before snowfall intensifies.
